Fredy gets First at Ossining
Fredy Ramirez decided to play with kids his own age this week as he wrestled in his second career tournament at Ossining. But it is tough to find many wrestlers your size when you're a big 6th grader. It was hard to find his teammates too. As I walked into the gym, Fredy said "Where is everybody?" I explained that Julio and Angel were out on the Island and Max had a party to go to. Then I looked at his chart and thought 'Maybe Fredy is talking about the competition'
The chart on the wall listed the weight range in the 11 & 12 year old group: 150 - 169. Well, there were only two kids in the weight class and Fredy weighed in at 150. Guess how much his Bronxville opponent weighed? Giving away 19 pounds, Fredy was unintimidated and was the aggressor throughout the match.
He scored a takedown midway through the first and turned his opponent for 3 back points at the end of the third. In the 2nd Fredy must have been watching Mitch Calrk's "Take Top" tape, because that is what he chose. He rode well for about 30 seconds before giving up an escape and led 5-1 going into the 3rd. The Bronxville wrestler chose neutral in the 3rd and Fredy quickly took him down to his back. Fredy kept adjusting his position until he earned a pin and the gold medal at the 2:49 mark.
Congratulations on your 1st "Chart", Fredy. You've made a lot of progress in your first year.
