Suffern Tourney Results

Impressions:
Well run event with 7 wrestling areas. The single elimination format accellerates the pace of the tournament (we were done by 3:00), but it just doesn't offer enough mat experience to anyone who loses in the 1st round.

Julio Alvarado: poor Julio drew the toughest kid in the bracket in the opening round and took one on the chin. Technically he could hang with the kid, but was giving away 10 pounds and was over-powered. 9-10 year olds - 60 lbs.

Max Josephson: Opened with a 19-1 Technical Fall against a Suffern kid, then dropped a 4-0 decision to a Mahopac kid. He recorded a pin in the consi finals over a Nanuet kid in under 20 seconds. 11-12 year olds - 78 lbs.

Joe Schiavone: Joey got a bye into the finals and took bottom in the third with the match tied at 4. He hit a wrist roll for a reversal and back points, then rode out the period for a 9-4 decision and the gold medal. 11-12 year olds - Hwt.

Congrats to Nanuet tourney participants!

We had a long day in the gym last Sunday, but it was worth it!
Six of our club members participated, two of them for the first time.
  • 1st place: Julio Alvarado in the Midget Division
  • 3rd Place: Max Josephson in the Novice Division
  • 3rd Place: Anthony Signorelli in the Novice Division
  • 4th Place: Joey Donat in the Novice Division
  • Joey Guido in the Novice Division
  • Nick Palmieri in the Novice Division
Tourney notes:
Julio Alvarado showed that the work he and Max got up in Connecticut over the last two weekends paid big dividends. He went 3-0, beating a NY State Champ from North Rockland with a pivotal takedown for backpoints late in the 3rd period.

Anthony Signorelli and Joey Donat met in the consolation finals. Donat wrestled in his first tournament ever and recorded a fall in the wrestlebacks . Nick Palmieri also wrestled in his first tourney and had to injury default out of the consolation finals. Congrats to Joey and Nick for getting that 1st tournament under their belts.

Joey Guido used his speed to win his opening match, then dropped into the wrestlebacks. He lost a tight 9-8 battle against another talented North Rockland wrestler in the consolation semi-finals, unable to convert a pin for the last 15 seconds of the match.

Max Josephson dropped a tight decision to a Huntington, LI wrestler in the opening round, then easily majored his wrestle-back opponent. He dropped an exhibition bout against good freind Steve Rodriguez (the talented son of the Fox Lane Ass't Coach) after receiving forfeits for his 3rd place medal.

The next area tournament is in Suffern (Rockland county) on Feb 27. Details to follow.

USA Wrestling Cards

If I didn't give you a card at practice I will be mailing them soon. When you receive the card in the mail: sign, detach and mail the release form. This activates a complimentary subscription to the magazine: "USA Wrestler" and your secondary carrier insurance coverage. Keep the "Competitor's Membership" card to produce at any USA sanctioned tournaments you might enter in the spring or summer.
When Port Chester Head Coach Greg Domestico posts his 'Open Mats" schedule for the post-season, I'll let you know. There are other USA clubs in Section I that hold open mats for USA card holders throughout the spring and summer (New Rochelle and Clarkstown South are both good).
A local web-site with a message board which was recently rebuilt is www.section1wrestling.com . The site itself is not finished and the board is mostly populated by a lot of sophomoric posts, but serious inquiries about off-season workout and tournament opportunities are usually answered.
