T-Shirts and such

Thanks to all who made the 4th annual Pizza party a memorable night. Sorry the T-shirts were not ready to be distributed. I'm told they will be ready for the Carmel tourney. I'll bring the batch (on the assumption I'll have them) so we can make a strong showing at the tourney in a 'unified front'.

You have all made great progress this year and should all be proud. Let's all try to finish up strong with a good showing at Carmel.

We'll have our final practice on Monday, April 4th.

Those of you who want to continue are welcome to join 'open mats' as we enter the spring Freestyle/Greco-Roman season. Your USA wrestling cards make you eligible to attend any open mat program run within Section I. New Rochelle and Clarkstown South are highly recommended. Date postings will follow.

Fredy gets First at Ossining

Fredy Ramirez decided to play with kids his own age this week as he wrestled in his second career tournament at Ossining. But it is tough to find many wrestlers your size when you're a big 6th grader. It was hard to find his teammates too. As I walked into the gym, Fredy said "Where is everybody?" I explained that Julio and Angel were out on the Island and Max had a party to go to. Then I looked at his chart and thought 'Maybe Fredy is talking about the competition'

The chart on the wall listed the weight range in the 11 & 12 year old group: 150 - 169. Well, there were only two kids in the weight class and Fredy weighed in at 150. Guess how much his Bronxville opponent weighed? Giving away 19 pounds, Fredy was unintimidated and was the aggressor throughout the match.

He scored a takedown midway through the first and turned his opponent for 3 back points at the end of the third. In the 2nd Fredy must have been watching Mitch Calrk's "Take Top" tape, because that is what he chose. He rode well for about 30 seconds before giving up an escape and led 5-1 going into the 3rd. The Bronxville wrestler chose neutral in the 3rd and Fredy quickly took him down to his back. Fredy kept adjusting his position until he earned a pin and the gold medal at the 2:49 mark.

Congratulations on your 1st "Chart", Fredy. You've made a lot of progress in your first year.

Julio: 3rd at States!!

Julio Alvarado opted out of the Ardsley tournament and went hunting for bigger game: a State Title at Port Jervis. The USA Wrestling-sponsored tournament drew participants from Niagara Falls to Montauk. Julio entered the tournament with cautious optimism as he had already defeated the defending State Champ at the Nanuet Tournament in an exciting final that came down to a takedown late in the third period.

The 50-pound 10-year old dropped a decision in the opening round to a tough kid from Long Island, and then wrestled back to face the same wrestler for 3rd place. This time the scrappy takedown specialist controlled the match and earned a bronze plaque that recognizes him as the 3rd best wrestler in New York.

Congrats on a great accomplishment.
Way to go Julio!!

Ardsley results

Great job by our club members at last week's Ardsley tournament:

Nick Palmieri and Justin Gluck both wrestled in the Novice Division in their second consecutive tournament. Justin caught a stud in the first round, but wrestled a great 2nd bout: always the aggressor on his feet, the match went into overtime and a failed shot was countered by a go-behind. Nick opened with a win to reach the semis, then lost to the eventual champ. He turned his opponent in the consi finals for a fall to gain a 3rd place and the Bronze medal.

Fredy Ramirez had a tough decision to make as he entered his first tourney: should I stay or should I go? He was the sole entry in his Novice weight bracket and could have walked away. Instead, he decided to move up to the Schoolboy division to face a tough bracket of six experienced middle schoolers. Fredy met the eventual champ in his first match and didn't last long, but adjusted his defense and made it into the second period against his next opponent. The decision to 'bump up' and his ability to scrap into the 2nd period against a clearly superior opponent shows how determined this 1st year wrestler can be.

James Mutino brought home a Gold in the 132 lb class of the Schoolboy division. 'Mute' has been with the club for three years and showed his experience by dominating the three man round-robin. He was unscored upon and built substantial leads before pinning both opponents, who both appeared to have experience levels commensurate with James. Neither expected to lose and seemed unhappy to be shut down in all facets of their offense.

Nice job guys.

Getting your hand raised is addictive, but getting mat experience is more important.
